Renfe tests Civia trains on Bilbao commuter railway

en.Wedoany.com Reported - Renfe has launched testing of a Civia electric multiple unit (EMU) in Bilbao, the latest step in the modernization of rolling stock for commuter services in the Basque Country.

The Civia EMU is currently operating on the C1 line (Bilbao Abando Indalecio Prieto–Santurtzi) and C2 line (Bilbao Abando Indalecio Prieto–Muskiz) of the Bilbao commuter rail network (Cercanías).

These tests are technical in nature, aimed at verifying train performance from an operational perspective and compatibility with the infrastructure and specific conditions of the Biscay commuter rail network. Renfe stated that this phase does not yet mean the Civia trains have entered commercial service, but it will help identify any necessary adjustments before they are put into operation.

The launch of these tests is part of Renfe's commitment to the Basque Government following the transfer of suburban transport services in the Basque Country, contributing to the gradual renewal of the rolling stock fleet.

The Civia EMU is an electric multiple unit developed specifically for suburban transport in Spain's major metropolitan areas, featuring high passenger capacity, low energy consumption, and enhanced passenger comfort. The vehicles are equipped with low-floor design and dedicated spaces for passengers with reduced mobility, modern climate control systems, video surveillance, audio and visual passenger information systems, and other technologies aimed at improving service reliability and quality.

Renfe will continue to collaborate with the Basque Government on the fleet modernization plan. Testing the Civia trains on the C1 and C2 lines is a significant step in this process, with the goal of developing a more modern, accessible, and better-suited suburban rail system to meet the travel needs of the public.
