en.Wedoany.com Reported - Moeve and steelmaker ArcelorMittal have signed a large-scale Energy Savings Certificate (CAE) acquisition agreement, committing to purchase 2.1 terawatt-hours (TWh) of energy savings certificates annually. This acquisition volume is ten times larger than the largest similar agreement publicly announced to date in the Spanish market. In a joint statement on Wednesday, the two companies noted that the deal aims to strengthen the application of the energy savings certificate mechanism as an effective tool for industrial decarbonization and to drive the steel production sector towards a more sustainable transformation.

Energy efficiency gains are a key component of the decarbonization plan for ArcelorMittal's long products manufacturing division in Gijón (Asturias). This plan is based on an investment in a new electric arc furnace steel plant currently in the final stages of construction. The results will directly reduce energy consumption and emissions in the steel production process. In terms of energy, the annual reduction of 2.1 TWh in energy consumption represents more than 5% of the total final energy consumption of the Principality of Asturias. Once the transformation is fully completed, these energy-saving measures could reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) equivalent emissions from the Asturian steel industry by up to 1 million tons annually.
Carlos Barrasa, Executive Vice President of Commercial & Clean Energy at Moeve, stated that the agreement helps "improve the sustainability and competitiveness of energy-intensive industries." Barrasa further noted: "Energy savings certificates have become a key lever to activate the energy transition in sectors like steel. At Moeve, we not only want to accompany our industrial clients through this change but also lead it, helping them fully unlock all the advantages of energy efficiency." Philippe Meyran, CEO of ArcelorMittal Spain, commented that the agreement with Moeve provides "a decisive boost to our decarbonization plan at the ArcelorMittal Gijón plant in Asturias," and emphasized that the results will "allow us to produce steel with low carbon emissions, ensuring a more sustainable future for our business."
The two companies explained that mechanisms like Energy Savings Certificates (CAE) can promote and accelerate the implementation of high-investment industrial projects required for the energy transition. Specifically, CAEs allow companies to fulfill their obligations to the National Energy Efficiency Fund (Fondo Nacional de Eficiencia Energética) through economic contributions and certified energy savings. Each CAE certificate represents one kilowatt-hour (kWh) of energy savings achieved within a year, which can be generated through specific actions focused on improving energy efficiency and reducing emissions, thereby accelerating their impact on industrial decarbonization efforts. The company emphasized: "This agreement consolidates Moeve's position as a key player in Spain's emerging CAE market and is part of its 'Moeve decarbonize' commercial proposal." The core of this commercial proposal is to accompany industrial clients through their decarbonization roadmap, offering them a range of energy sources including renewable electricity, biomethane, and hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO), while simultaneously providing solutions to optimize energy costs.
