Namibia Seeking Consultants for Solar at Dam

Wedoany.com Report-May 26, Namibia Water Corp. (Namwater) is seeking consultants to assist in developing solar plants near the Von Bach Dam in the Otjozondjupa region of eastern Namibia. The initiative aims to harness solar energy to support the water supply system serving the capital, Windhoek.

The Von Bach Dam, constructed in 1968 and operational since 1970, is a key source of water for Windhoek. The planned solar plants will be built on Namwater-owned land and will provide power for the water distribution network connecting the dam to the capital. This project reflects Namibia’s commitment to integrating renewable energy into its infrastructure to enhance sustainability and efficiency.

Namwater has outlined a clear timeline for the project. A non-compulsory pre-bid meeting is scheduled for June 18, allowing potential consultants to gain insights into the project’s requirements. Expressions of interest must be submitted by July 8, marking the deadline for consultants to participate in the tender process.

The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) reported that Namibia’s total solar capacity reached 163 MW by the end of 2024. The addition of solar plants near the Von Bach Dam will further expand the country’s renewable energy portfolio, supporting its efforts to meet growing energy demands while reducing reliance on non-renewable sources.

The project is expected to improve the reliability of the water supply system by utilizing clean energy, contributing to both environmental and operational goals. Namwater’s initiative underscores the importance of innovative energy solutions in addressing infrastructure needs, ensuring a stable water supply for Windhoek while advancing Namibia’s renewable energy objectives.
