Wedoany.com Report-May 27, Rosatom, Russia’s state nuclear corporation, has proposed supplying Brazil with small nuclear power plants (SNPP) and high-capacity power units to enhance the country’s energy infrastructure. Ivan Dybov, Director of Rosatom Latin America, announced the initiative at the Nuclear Trade & Technology Exchange forum in Brazil, emphasizing the role of nuclear energy in sustainable development.

Dybov stated: “Emphasizing the importance of nuclear projects for addressing climate challenges and regional development, we are ready to expand cooperation and offer Brazil both small nuclear power plants and high-capacity power units to strengthen the country's energy system.” The proposal includes both land-based and floating small reactors, with potential for Brazilian companies to manufacture reactor vessels, fostering local industrial involvement.

Rosatom currently provides all enriched uranium for Brazil’s Angra Nuclear Power Plant and supplies medical isotopes for cancer diagnosis and treatment. This existing partnership forms the foundation for expanded collaboration. The corporation aims to support Brazil’s energy needs while contributing to environmental goals through low-emission nuclear technologies.

In early May, Rosatom CEO Alexei Likhachev discussed nuclear cooperation during high-level talks involving Brazil, Egypt, Mongolia, and European countries. Likhachev noted: “I can say that Vladimir Putin's negotiations with Egypt, Brazil, Mongolia and European countries this time were largely focused on nuclear topics.” He confirmed Brazil’s ongoing collaboration in uranium supplies and expressed interest in developing new high-capacity power units. Negotiations have started to explore these opportunities, with Brazil also showing interest in small-scale reactor technologies.

The proposed projects align with Brazil’s plans to diversify its energy mix and strengthen its energy system. By integrating small and high-capacity nuclear solutions, Rosatom aims to support sustainable energy production and regional development. The potential involvement of Brazilian enterprises in manufacturing could enhance local economic benefits while advancing technological capabilities.

Rosatom’s engagement with Brazil reflects a broader commitment to global nuclear energy development, leveraging its expertise in uranium supply and reactor technology. The collaboration seeks to deliver reliable, low-carbon energy solutions, contributing to both Brazil’s energy security and environmental objectives.
