The Mombasa-Nairobi Railway, stretching 472 kilometers from the port city of Mombasa in the east to the capital Nairobi in the west, is the first railway built since Kenya's independence and a landmark project of China-Kenya Belt and Road cooperation. The railway adopts Chinese standards, technology, equipment, and operation management models, becoming an important transport corridor connecting Kenya's coastal ports with inland regions.

Since the official launch of freight services in 2018, the freight volume of the Mombasa-Nairobi Railway has continued to grow. The types of goods transported have expanded from initial containers to include grain, fertilizer, steel, cement clinker, agricultural products, and cold-chain goods, effectively improving logistics efficiency, reducing overall transportation costs, and promoting connectivity between ports and inland areas.
