UK's AVK Completes Europe's First Dedicated PowerPod Facility
en.Wedoany.com Reported - AVK has completed Europe's first dedicated PowerPod facility in Haydock. The facility is used to assemble, integrate, and fully test critical power infrastructure before it arrives at data center sites, reducing on-site construction timelines and lowering the risk of project delays.

In traditional practice, the protection, cooling, and control equipment of large power systems require on-site commissioning at construction sites, where progress is vulnerable to weather, scheduling, and multi-party coordination issues. AVK has moved this process forward to a factory environment, enabling critical equipment to complete electrical commissioning before leaving the factory.
The Haydock facility was purpose-built for PowerPod production, with an assembly space of 140,000 square feet capable of accommodating 23 to 25 PowerPods simultaneously, with most units measuring 18 meters in length and 4.2 meters in width. The site also includes a 100,000-square-foot external yard and storage area for large equipment deliveries and finished product storage.
The production line is equipped with a 64-tonne overhead crane for positioning heavy components such as transformers and UPS systems. The facility features 383 linear meters of busway as the electrical backbone, enabling each PowerPod to undergo energization verification under full-load conditions before leaving the workshop, ensuring equipment is tested under real electrical conditions rather than merely confirmed on paper.
Each PowerPod undergoes full integration and full-power energization testing under controlled factory conditions, rather than being energized for the first time upon arrival at the actual site. The integration of generation, UPS, and switchgear is the stage most prone to bottlenecks in power system construction; resolving these issues in the factory allows equipment to be directly connected and energized upon arrival at the site, reducing on-site commissioning time.
Unlike modular suppliers that build around their own equipment, AVK deliberately maintains technology neutrality in its PowerPod approach. Operators can specify preferred UPS, switchgear, and other critical components, and AVK designs around those choices. This allows operators to retain existing supplier relationships and maintenance systems, or to choose technologies with the shortest delivery lead times when speed to energization is the priority. The PowerPod integrates high- and low-voltage switchgear, transformers, UPS, cooling, fire suppression, and control systems into a coordinated power system. Leveraging its background in power generation and backup power, the system can interface holistically with the data center powertrain, enabling AVK to act as a single energy partner for the entire power system rather than a supplier of just one component.
The Haydock facility has been designed to BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method) standards and is currently undergoing post-completion review, with certification expected imminently. Site operations include 285 rooftop solar panels, extensive natural daylight glazing, electric vehicle charging and bicycle facilities, as well as wildflower and no-mow areas to support local biodiversity.
The formation of the PowerPod division has driven significant expansion of AVK's workforce, with the team spanning modular power systems, supplier networks, and large-scale power assembly. This team completed the Haydock facility in record time and has already begun delivering on real customer orders. By industrializing the construction and testing of critical power equipment, AVK offers operators a faster path to energization. With AI driving surging power demand and grids facing unprecedented load pressures, the industry's focus is no longer on whether power exists, but on whether it can be delivered and energized at the speed the market requires. This is precisely the critical constraint the facility aims to address.
