en.Wedoany.com Reported - U.S. fusion energy company Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS) stated that, including the $863 million raised last year, its cumulative total funding has reached $4 billion. This scale accounts for approximately 30% of the total funding raised across the fusion industry to date, further solidifying CFS's position as the world's largest and leading fusion company.

Commonwealth Fusion Systems raises another $1 billion

CFS stated that its global network of private investors has further expanded, adding institutional investors such as pension funds, sovereign wealth funds, infrastructure investors, and industrial partners. The company noted that investors have seen tangible evidence during the parallel development of SPARC assembly and the ARC power plant, and have expressed confidence in its approach focused on fusion commercialization. The funds raised will be used to further accelerate the commercialization process.

CFS, spun out of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 2018, is currently building the SPARC prototype fusion device at its headquarters in Massachusetts. SPARC is a compact, high-magnetic-field, net-energy fusion device with dimensions comparable to existing medium-sized fusion devices, but with significantly stronger magnetic fields. This tokamak device will use powerful electromagnets to create the conditions required for fusion energy, including internal temperatures exceeding 100 million degrees Celsius, and is expected to produce 50-100 megawatts of fusion power with a fusion gain greater than 10.

As planned, SPARC will pave the way for ARC, the first commercially viable fusion power plant. ARC is expected to generate approximately 400 megawatts electric (MWe), enough to power a large industrial site or approximately 150,000 homes. Located at the Fall Line fusion power station in Chesterfield County, Virginia, ARC is scheduled to deliver power to the grid in the early 2030s.

Bob Mumgaard, the company's CEO and co-founder, stated that CFS is turning what was once impossible into an inevitability, bringing commercial fusion onto the grid in the 2030s. He said the company possesses proven science and mature execution capabilities continuously validated by the market, regularly inviting global investors to tour its headquarters in Devens, Massachusetts, where they can see tangible progress in preparing systems and completing the SPARC assembly.
