en.Wedoany.com Reported - Spain's Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITECO) has allocated €433.44 million from the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan (PRTR) to support 524 innovative renewable energy and storage projects, funded by the NextGenerationEU fund. The selected projects will add 1,225.66 MW of generation capacity (mainly solar PV) and 2,320.72 MWh of storage capacity.
Compared to the previous RENOINN 1 call, the number of funded projects has increased from 199 to 524, and the funding amount has risen from €148.45 million to €433.44 million, nearly tripling. This call received 882 applications, up from 308 in the previous round; the volume of applications prompted the managing body, the Institute for Energy Diversification and Saving (IDAE), to expand the initial budget by 110%.
Among the funded categories, "agrivoltaics + storage" ranks first, receiving €234 million across 118 projects, including 30 in Catalonia, 24 in the Valencian Community, and 16 in Castile and León. More than half of the funding goes to agricultural operations on cereal and woody crops (such as olive groves and orchards), with PV panels installed on elevated structures above 4 meters to allow continued farming; the remaining projects are distributed between intercropping systems and structures 2 to 4 meters high. In addition to power generation, these projects will generate technical information on agrivoltaic behavior; most will be equipped with sensors to monitor meteorological and agronomic variables, and will include control plots to compare crop growth. Over five years, beneficiaries must submit annual reports providing data on system performance and its impact on agricultural production.
The resolution also includes 29 floating PV projects with storage, receiving €37.1 million in funding, primarily for self-consumption facilities on agricultural irrigation reservoirs. Another 47 projects integrating renewable energy into infrastructure and man-made spaces receive €65.4 million in funding, driving total investment of €210.75 million. Of these projects, 42 are PV facilities, 4 are hydropower projects, and 1 is a wind project, located at wastewater treatment plants (EDAR), water treatment plants, landfills, and old mining sites under restoration, together providing 165.69 MW of generation capacity and 385.48 MWh of storage.
The program establishes a dedicated funding line for collective self-consumption with storage, totaling €45.7 million, covering 274 projects. According to reports submitted by developers, these facilities could benefit more than 9,000 vulnerable consumers. A fifth funding line invests over €51 million in 56 renewable heat pump projects to decarbonize heating and thermal processes. Among the selected installations, 29 are geothermal systems and 27 use ambient thermal energy from air-source or water-source heat pumps; beneficiaries include 26 homeowners' communities, with Galicia being the region with the most approved projects, totaling 18.
The beneficiary projects are spread across the country, with Catalonia leading with 189 projects, followed by the Valencian Community (69), Extremadura (19), and Andalusia (19). Through the second RENOINN call, MITECO further strengthens the deployment of renewable energy solutions that combine generation, storage, and territorial integration, promoting models such as agrivoltaics, shared self-consumption, and the electrification of thermal demand using renewable technologies.
