EnerSynk Plans to Develop Up to 3GW of Solar Projects in Zambia by 2030

en.Wedoany.com Reported - On September 21, Hungarian clean energy infrastructure developer EnerSynk Group disclosed plans to develop up to 3GW of solar infrastructure in Zambia by 2030. The plan takes the company's recently signed power purchase agreement for a 500MW photovoltaic project in Copperbelt Province as its starting point, and will gradually expand its development scale in Zambia through additional large-scale ground-mounted photovoltaic projects. EnerSynk has currently listed the 500MW Zambia project as its flagship project under development.

The first 500MW project is located in Copperbelt Province, Zambia. On September 15, EnerSynk signed a 25-year power purchase agreement with Zambia's national power utility ZESCO, with a contract value of approximately US$519 million. The project is planned to be implemented in three phases, with the first 300MW phase targeting commercial operation within 16 months after the agreement takes effect, followed by two 100MW phases planned to be commissioned within 22 months and 28 months respectively.

Following the signing of the power purchase agreement, the project has entered the stage of advancing technical studies, environmental and regulatory procedures, financing structure, and implementation plans. EnerSynk's official website currently lists the project status as "PPA Approved," with the project development scope being a 500MW utility-scale photovoltaic facility; subsequent works still need to complete a bankable feasibility study, grid impact assessment, environmental and social impact study, and financing arrangements.

EnerSynk's proposed 3GW target will continue to add solar development capacity beyond the existing 500MW project. The company's latest disclosure shows that Zambia is listed as a key market for its African energy infrastructure, and subsequent projects will continue the development model involving joint participation by governments, financing institutions, engineering delivery parties, and technology partners. At this stage, the Zambia project explicitly listed in the public project pipeline remains the 500MW Copperbelt Province photovoltaic project.

The Zambia Development Agency confirmed on September 18 that this round of the 500MW project power purchase agreement has established a long-term power sales framework for the project. Zambia is currently also expanding the participation scale of independent power producers, and the government's energy plan proposes to further increase the share of non-hydro renewable energy by 2030 and add large-scale power generation and transmission infrastructure.
