en.Wedoany.com Reported - On August 6, Lao hydropower was delivered to China's Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area via the China-Laos 500 kV interconnection project. The transmission is expected to last until the end of October, with a total volume of approximately 600 million kWh, and the relevant electricity will simultaneously participate in the southern regional electricity market trading. This marks the continued enhancement of power interchange capacity between China and Laos, and further improvement in the optimal allocation of cross-regional clean energy.

The China-Laos 500 kV interconnection project was officially put into operation on April 20 this year. On the day of its commissioning, photovoltaic power from the clean energy base in northern Laos was delivered to Yunnan through this channel, marking the first time an overseas renewable energy project was integrated into China's electricity market. The successful delivery of Lao hydropower to the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area has further expanded the consumption scope of cross-border clean energy, promoting the formation of a "photovoltaic + hydropower" multi-energy complementary cross-border clean energy transmission pattern.

According to reports, the total market-based trading volume of photovoltaic and hydropower through the China-Laos 500 kV interconnection project in 2026 is expected to reach 1.5 billion kWh. China Southern Power Grid stated that in the next step, it will continue to expand the depth and breadth of cross-border electricity trading, fully leverage the synergistic effect of the China-Laos 500 kV interconnection project and the West-to-East Power Transmission corridor, promote complementary energy advantages between the two countries, enhance the efficiency of energy resource allocation in the Lancang-Mekong region, and advance the Belt and Road energy cooperation in a deeper and more practical manner.

It is understood that China-Laos power interconnection cooperation has spanned more than a decade. In 2009, China Southern Power Grid first supplied electricity to northern Laos via a 115 kV line; in 2022, two-way electricity trade between China and Laos was officially launched through the 115 kV line; and following the commissioning of the China-Laos 500 kV interconnection project in April this year, the two countries' power cooperation has officially entered a new stage featuring higher voltage levels, larger transmission capacity, and market-oriented operation.
