The packaging utilizes LYB CirculenRevive polymers (100% attributable recycled content) through an ISCC PLUS-certified mass balance approach, achieving 75% recycled material content by converting hard-to-recycle post-consumer mixed plastic waste into high-quality materials that meet food packaging requirements.

LYB is building MoReTec-1, its first commercial-scale catalytic chemical recycling facility in Wesseling, Germany, and plans to supply subsequent polymers for Marabou packaging from this plant. Once operational, the facility will connect advanced sorting and recycling infrastructure with the company's existing crackers and polymerization assets, expanding access to circular feedstocks within the group.
LYB CEO Peter Vanacker said this collaboration demonstrates the company's ability to connect chemical recycling innovation with the scale and reach of its existing production network. As MoReTec-1 progresses, the plant will support future polymer supply for Marabou packaging while enhancing the capability to convert hard-to-recycle plastic waste into circular feedstocks for existing facilities, creating value while advancing circular and low-carbon strategies.
MoReTec-1 is designed with an annual capacity of 50,000 tons of feedstock for LYB's existing production facilities to produce recycled polymers. The joint venture Source One Plastics in Eicklingen, Germany, processes mixed plastic waste into feedstock suitable for chemical recycling, supporting raw material supply once MoReTec-1 becomes operational. Currently, LYB's CirculenRevive polymer production relies on third-party pyrolysis oil as recycled feedstock.
In the value chain division, LYB supplies circular polymers, Taghleef Industries develops the base film, and Amcor processes the material into Mondelez's final flexible packaging. Richard Akkermans, Packaging Sustainability Manager at Mondelez International, stated that the company aims to increase the use of recycled plastics in packaging materials and is willing to work with multiple value chain partners, including LYB, to advance this goal. For consumers, plastic packaging can be recycled and reused in food packaging—this project demonstrates how brand owners, recyclers, packaging material producers, and converters can collectively turn circular visions into commercial reality.
The new packaging is designed to support European recycling targets and prepare for anticipated recycled content requirements under the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR). Chemical recycling addresses the challenge of soft packaging waste that was previously difficult to recycle into food-grade materials. Through chemical recycling processes, CirculenRevive polymers convert hard-to-recycle mixed plastic waste (including flexible packaging) into polymer production feedstocks, replacing fossil-based feedstocks in existing production processes, with attribution to final products via the ISCC PLUS-certified mass balance method. The resulting polymers are ready-to-use with virgin-like quality, enabling brand owners to introduce recycled content while meeting performance and regulatory requirements.
