Wedoany.com Report-Jun 5, Switzerland’s Implenia has secured a €200 million contract from DB InfraGO, Germany’s state rail infrastructure operator, to construct two rail tunnels beneath Frankfurt. The project involves a new route for the Nordmainische S-Bahn, connecting a planned S-Bahn station at Konstablerwache in central Frankfurt to Fechenheim in the northeast, extending toward Hanau and Maintal.

The scope of Implenia’s work includes initial excavation and construction of the S-Bahn station, drilling two 1.2-kilometer tunnel tubes using boring machines, and implementing extensive water management measures. Specialized foundation services are required due to the project’s location in densely populated urban areas, ensuring minimal disruption and environmental impact.

Edwin Scherer, Implenia’s head of civil engineering, stated: “Maintaining and developing a functioning transport infrastructure is central to the sustainable development of our cities.” The project aligns with efforts to enhance urban mobility and support sustainable growth in Frankfurt’s transportation network.

Implenia is set to finalize the detailed design by the end of 2025, with construction scheduled to start in early 2026 and targeted for completion in 2031. The tunnels will facilitate efficient rail connectivity, improving access across Frankfurt and neighboring regions.

This initiative strengthens Frankfurt’s role as a key transportation hub in Germany. The Nordmainische S-Bahn project supports the region’s growing need for reliable public transport, contributing to reduced congestion and enhanced connectivity for residents and businesses. Implenia’s expertise in complex infrastructure projects ensures the delivery of high-quality, sustainable solutions tailored to urban challenges.

The contract reflects Implenia’s commitment to advancing rail infrastructure through innovative engineering. By integrating advanced tunneling techniques and robust water management, the project addresses the technical demands of building in a bustling city environment while prioritizing sustainability and operational efficiency.

This development is a significant step in modernizing Frankfurt’s transport system, fostering economic growth and environmental responsibility. The collaboration between Implenia and DB InfraGO underscores a shared focus on delivering infrastructure that supports long-term urban development and connectivity in one of Germany’s major cities.
