UAE's GSU Completes 50MW Solar and 15MWh Storage in Central African Republic

en.Wedoany.com Reported - Global South Utilities (GSU), a UAE-based developer, has completed construction of a 50 MW solar project and its associated 15 MWh battery energy storage system in Sakaï, southwest of Bangui, the capital of the Central African Republic. The project broke ground in August last year.

According to a statement released by the Emirates News Agency, this is the largest infrastructure project in the history of the Central African Republic, capable of boosting the country's power generation capacity by more than 60%.

The plant is equipped with over 80,000 solar panels and 156 solar inverters. In a social media post, the Central African Republic government stated that once the project is connected to the Central African Energy Network, it will supply electricity to more than 300,000 households.

At the inauguration ceremony, Rufin Benam Beltoungou, Interim Minister for Energy and Water Development, noted that the first phase of the project will deliver 15 MW of power to communities in the 3rd and 9th districts of Bangui, with connections to remaining areas scheduled for completion by December next year.

GSU stated that the Sakaï project lays the foundation for broader economic progress in the country. The developer added: "More reliable electricity will support healthcare, education, and public services, help businesses and industries grow, attract new investment, and bring more opportunities to communities across the Central African Republic."

Data tracked by The Africa Solar Industry Association (AFSIA) project database shows that the Central African Republic currently has a total of 92.1 MW of operational solar projects and 43.1 MWh of battery storage capacity.
