AIM specializes in the development of autonomous operation technology for bulldozers and hydraulic excavators, and has already deployed fleets of autonomous bulldozers and hydraulic excavators in commercial settings.

Chikashi Shike, President of Komatsu's Solutions Division, stated that through this collaboration, Smart Construction will be combined with AIM's technology to create a seamless process from project planning and management to autonomous execution, accelerating overall project optimization. The complementary strengths of the two companies will help enhance construction safety, improve production efficiency, and promote the development of sustainable infrastructure.

The construction industry currently faces multiple pressures, including growing infrastructure demand, labor shortages, and increasingly stringent safety and productivity requirements. Through construction machinery, mining equipment, and digital solutions, Komatsu assists construction companies in balancing safety, efficiency, and reduced environmental impact. Smart Construction, developed by Komatsu and EARTHBRAIN, is a digital construction management solution that connects project planning, digital equipment, site management, and remote operation to support overall project optimization.

The three companies had previously conducted technical verification and commercial development collaboration on autonomous construction solutions for bulldozers and hydraulic excavators. This collaboration has now entered the commercial deployment phase in the U.S. market, with Komatsu's autonomous machines already operating at customer sites. As planned, the solution will be introduced to the Japanese market starting in 2027.

On the technical front, the solution inputs project plans and target terrain data generated by Smart Construction into AIM's physical AI platform, which drives the equipment to achieve autonomous operation. After understanding project objectives, excavators and bulldozers can autonomously determine construction methods, travel routes, and execute specific tasks. Customers can manage the entire construction process through a unified digital workflow, covering planning, autonomous operation, progress visualization, and performance data utilization, enabling process automation and overall optimization. In addition, AIM's technology can be retrofitted directly onto existing excavators and bulldozers, allowing customers to gradually introduce autonomous construction capabilities using their existing equipment without waiting for machine replacement.

The three companies will integrate their respective capabilities in construction machinery manufacturing, digital construction management solutions, and autonomous operation technology to provide a new solution that combines construction management with autonomous execution, addressing labor shortages and driving digital transformation at construction sites. In subsequent collaboration, the three parties will continue to integrate technology and experience, progressively deepening the integration between Smart Construction and AIM's physical AI platform to advance the deployment of autonomous construction solutions.
