American Petroleum Institute and Mexico's IMP Sign Cooperation Agreement on Oil and Gas Standards and Technical Training

en.Wedoany.com Reported - The American Petroleum Institute (API) and the Mexican Petroleum Institute (IMP) have signed a memorandum of understanding to expand cooperation on oil and gas industry standards, technical training and certification, research, and regulatory development in Mexico.

Under the agreement, API and IMP establish a framework to share technical knowledge and strengthen Mexico's domestic energy capabilities. Areas of cooperation cover industry standards, workforce development, and emerging technology priorities such as methane emissions, carbon capture and storage (CCS), and offshore pipeline safety.

The agreement specifies that the two parties will collaborate on reviewing Spanish translations of industry standards and conducting technical verification, exchanging information on regulatory developments and recommended practices, while supporting the participation of IMP experts in API standards development committees.

Anchal Liddar, API's Senior Vice President of Global Industry Services, stated that API brings globally recognized standards and industry expertise, while IMP, as a public research center, offers advantages in research capabilities, technical expertise, and long-standing experience in Mexico's hydrocarbon sector—together, these complementary strengths create a platform for knowledge transfer and joint technical cooperation.

The two parties will also carry out workforce training and certification programs, including instructor development, and explore the feasibility of IMP becoming an API-recognized training provider.

API holds more than 800 industry standards along with supporting certification and training programs. IMP is a public research organization that supports Mexico's hydrocarbon industry through research and technology development. IMP Director General Elizabeth Mar stated that this alliance plays an important role in advancing industrial development, energy transition, and local content (domestic content), and that training and certifying the national supply chain to API standards can help Mexican companies enhance their competitiveness.

The two parties have developed a work plan focused on four key areas: standards; training and certification; research, innovation, and standardization; and regulatory monitoring and information exchange.
