en.Wedoany.com Reported - Squadron Energy has completed the refinancing of its Australian renewable energy portfolio, securing debt commitments totaling more than AU$2.7 billion (US$1.76 billion). The transaction restructured the financing arrangements for approximately 2GW of operational or under-construction wind projects, while also providing flexibility for the company to expand into battery storage and hybrid assets.

Squadron Energy is one of Australia's largest renewable energy developers and owners, with a portfolio that includes the Uungula, Murra Warra, Sapphire, and Crudine Ridge wind farms. According to Herbert Smith Freehills Kramer (HSF Kramer), the law firm advising on the transaction, the refinanced portfolio encompasses approximately 1.5GW of operational and under-construction wind capacity, with Macquarie Bank serving as the company's financial advisor.
Law firm Allens advised the lenders on the refinancing. Allens co-lead partner Tim Stewart stated that the transaction reflects a broader pattern among developers with mature asset portfolios. He said that as portfolios mature, sponsors are increasingly seeking opportunities to further streamline their debt platforms and inject flexibility to support future growth and diversification. Allens previously advised on the original financing structure for the portfolio in 2023 and on the financing for the 414MW Uungula wind farm.
HSF Kramer project finance partner Gerard Pike said the refinancing was designed to create a more flexible non-recourse financing platform for Squadron Energy's upcoming renewable energy and storage projects. He noted that the financing represents another step in the market's evolution, aimed at bringing these new projects into the construction phase as efficiently as possible.
The refinancing platform's explicit provisions for future battery storage and hybrid development reflect Squadron Energy's ongoing business transition. In 2024, the company applied for approval in New South Wales for an 8-hour duration battery energy storage system (BESS), planning to co-locate 1,200MWh of storage capacity with a 300MW wind project at the proposed Conargo wind farm within the South West Renewable Energy Zone (REZ). The company is also advancing a standalone 1,800MWh wind-plus-storage project west of Gulgong in the Central-West Orana REZ, for which the NSW Independent Planning Commission has recommended approval.
Squadron Energy CEO Rob Wheals has publicly stated that Australia's renewable energy buildout needs to diversify beyond solar-dominated hybrid projects. Speaking last month at the Australian Clean Energy Summit 2026, Wheals said Squadron Energy's own analysis shows that a grid based purely on solar hybrid projects would require five times more infrastructure compared to a more diversified technology mix, and that wind and long-duration storage need to attract the same investment signals currently flowing to solar and short-duration battery storage systems.
The refinancing lands as Australia's battery storage capacity continues to expand rapidly. According to analysis by energy transition consultant Geoff Eldridge, battery discharge across the Australian National Electricity Market (NEM) reached a record 4,325MW on August 11, with the entire battery storage fleet experiencing approximately 8.3GW of intraday operational fluctuation between midday charging and evening discharging.
The trend toward more flexible, diversified portfolio financing structures is expected to be one of the key themes at the Battery Asset Management Summit Australia 2026. The summit will be held in Sydney from August 25 to 26, where asset owners and lenders will discuss revenue strategies and capital allocation across the nation's expanding pipeline of storage and hybrid projects.
