BW ESS acquires Australia's Yanco 250MW/1GWh energy storage, to be operational in 2028

en.Wedoany.com Reported - BW ESS has completed the acquisition of the Yanco Battery Energy Storage System (Yanco BESS). Located in the Riverina region of New South Wales, the project has a capacity of 250 MW/1 GWh and was sold by Australian renewable energy developer ACEnergy.

Following the transaction, BW ESS will be responsible for the construction and long-term operation of this large-scale battery project, which is expected to commence commercial operations in 2028.

Once operational, the project will connect to the Yanco 132 kV substation, providing peak shaving capacity, energy arbitrage, and system security services to the National Electricity Market (NEM).

ACEnergy led the Yanco BESS through the full process from early-stage development to construction-ready status, covering land acquisition, planning approvals, grid connection, and project-required contracts.

Subsequent construction and management will be taken over by BW ESS, while the community and local stakeholder engagement initiated by ACEnergy will continue to be advanced.

Andy Hadland, Executive Director of BW ESS, stated that the company is pleased to welcome Yanco BESS into its growing Australian portfolio. As a long-term owner and operator of energy storage assets, the company will progress the project in a responsible manner, build strong local relationships, and create lasting value for the power system.

CATL has been selected as the system integrator for the project, with ACLE Services serving as the Balance of Plant (BoP) contractor. Both companies will also undertake long-term operation and maintenance services for the battery units.

Construction is scheduled to commence later this year. The capacity swap agreement is expected to support long-term revenue for the facility, providing contracted cash flows.

Yanco BESS is the fifth large-scale battery energy storage system to reach financial close for ACEnergy.

Raymond Wang, Managing Director of ACEnergy, stated that achieving financial close on this project is a significant milestone for the company and reflects market recognition of the ACEnergy platform. The project has advanced from the origination stage to construction-ready status, with close collaboration maintained with the local community and stakeholders throughout.

This acquisition expands BW ESS's Australian project portfolio. The portfolio currently includes projects under commissioning totaling 1.3 GWh, projects nearing construction start totaling 1 GWh, and a greenfield project pipeline of approximately 2 GW within the National Electricity Market.
