Turkey sharply increases diesel imports from the US and India in August

en.Wedoany.com Reported - Since August, Turkey's diesel imports from India and the United States have risen to record highs. Kpler vessel tracking data shows that as of August 27, Turkey's diesel imports from India exceeded 120,000 barrels per day in the month, with approximately 90,000 barrels per day from the United States—both marking the highest monthly levels in its statistics since 2017.

During the same period, Turkey's diesel imports from Russia fell to approximately 80,000 barrels per day, down from about 100,000 barrels per day in July. Earlier this year, through the preceding months, this import volume had remained above 200,000 barrels per day. Russia's share of Turkey's diesel imports dropped from 85% in 2025 to about 20% in August this year; in 2025, Russia supplied Turkey with approximately 281,000 barrels per day of diesel.

Another set of energy flow data estimates that in August, India supplied Turkey with approximately 74,000 barrels per day of diesel, and the United States about 70,000 barrels per day—the highest levels in this dataset since 2022 and 2019, respectively. While the two datasets differ in their estimates of specific import volumes, both indicate a significant increase in Turkey's purchases from India and the United States in August.

The Russian government issued fuel export restrictions on July 30, limiting exports of gasoline, diesel, marine fuel, and diesel distillates from August 1 through January 31, 2027; starting September 1, the restrictions on diesel, marine fuel, and diesel distillates no longer apply to Russian direct producers. Russian direct producers remained subject to diesel export restrictions until the end of August.

Turkey's energy regulatory authority has published its 2025 annual oil market report and continues to release monthly oil market data for 2026. To date, the latest monthly report published is the June 2026 report, released on August 14.
