Peru's Technical Potential for Renewable Power Generation Exceeds 93,000 MW

en.Wedoany.com Reported - On August 31, the General Directorate of Electricity of Peru's Ministry of Energy and Mines released data from the "Electric Power Investment Outlook and Opportunities" report, indicating that the combined technical potential of Peru's hydropower, wind power, and geothermal resources exceeds 93,000 MW. Among these, the technical potential for hydropower is approximately 70,000 MW, wind power is approximately 20,493 MW, and geothermal resources are approximately 2,860 MW, totaling about 93,353 MW across the three categories.

Hydropower is the largest of the three resource categories. The report shows that the hydropower resources currently utilized in Peru account for approximately 8% of the technical potential, with an additional 4% in the project development stage. Based on a technical potential of 70,000 MW, the utilized scale corresponds to approximately 5,600 MW, while resources in the development stage amount to approximately 2,800 MW.

Peru's technical potential for wind power is approximately 20,493 MW, with resources mainly concentrated in coastal areas. Currently, about 5% of the wind power potential has been utilized, with another 3% entering the project development stage. Energy investment materials previously released by Peru's Ministry of Energy and Mines show that the 20,493 MW wind power technical potential figure comes from the national wind energy resource assessment, with Piura and Lambayeque having approximately 7,098 MW and 7,017 MW of developable wind energy resources, respectively.

In terms of geothermal energy, Peru's technical resource potential is approximately 2,860 MW, mainly distributed in the southern region, with no geothermal power generation projects currently under development. Materials for the power sector previously submitted by the Ministry of Energy and Mines also list the geothermal potential at 2,860 MW, with existing installed geothermal power generation capacity at 0 MW.

Solar resources were not included in the total potential of over 93,000 MW from hydropower, wind power, and geothermal energy. The report does not provide a MW-scale figure for the national solar technical potential but lists solar energy as one of the main resources for new power source development in Peru. Materials from the Ministry of Energy and Mines indicate that northern, southern, and certain highland regions of Peru have conditions suitable for solar power generation development.

As of the end of July 2026, Peru has six additional solar and wind power projects under construction, with a planned total new installed capacity of 1,246.7 MW and a total investment of approximately USD 996.3 million, including five photovoltaic power plants and one wind farm. Among these, the Illa photovoltaic power plant has an installed capacity of 396 MW with an investment of USD 341.9 million; the Caravelí wind farm has an installed capacity of 219.6 MW with an investment of USD 165.6 million; and the Babilonia photovoltaic project has an installed capacity of 200 MW with an investment of USD 179.7 million.

Among the aforementioned projects under construction, the Caravelí wind project has reached approximately 98.8% engineering progress, the Illa photovoltaic project approximately 96%, Wayra Solar approximately 85.4%, San José approximately 70.2%, and Babilonia and Lupi approximately 33% and 19.8%, respectively.
