Telkominfra and Transcelestial to Expand Laser Communication Network in Indonesia
en.Wedoany.com Reported - On September 8, Telkominfra, a telecommunications infrastructure company under Telkom Indonesia, expanded its partnership with Transcelestial to deploy the CENTAURI free-space optical communication system in Indonesia, offering it as a managed telecommunications infrastructure service to operators and enterprise customers. Under the collaboration arrangement, Telkominfra is responsible for link implementation, operations, and maintenance, while Transcelestial provides the CENTAURI optical wireless communication system. The two parties have begun advancing initial customer projects and proof-of-concept deployments.

The project initially targets scenarios such as mobile communication backhaul, enterprise and campus connectivity, data center interconnection, remote area access, smart cities, and post-disaster communication restoration. For new 5G sites where fiber construction has not yet been completed, CENTAURI can first establish backhaul connectivity through line-of-sight laser links, with network switching occurring after permanent fiber lines are deployed; data centers and network nodes can also use the system as a backup connection physically separated from existing fiber paths.
According to Transcelestial's latest project materials, more than 40 CENTAURI links have been deployed in Indonesia to date, with one link at the domestic terminal of Bali's Ngurah Rai International Airport achieving a transmission capacity of 10Gbps. Existing deployed links collectively cover approximately 300 kilometers, with cumulative data transmission of about 1.8Tbps. This collaboration further expands existing project deployments into an infrastructure service model where Telkominfra provides implementation and maintenance.
Telkominfra currently operates through 11 regional offices in Indonesia, managing more than 61,000 communication sites, with power solution operations and maintenance covering approximately 59,000 sites, and operating nearly 27,000 kilometers of submarine fiber optic cables. This collaboration between the two parties has progressed from earlier technical deployments to the phase of expanding customer applications and proof-of-concept initiatives.
