Indiana Plans to Build Its First Advanced Small Modular Nuclear Reactor

en.Wedoany.com Reported - September 10, 2026 — The Trump administration announced a plan to build Indiana's first advanced small modular nuclear reactor. Under the plan, the reactor will be completed no later than September 2028 at the Crane Naval Weapons Support Center in Martin County.

Officials said the project will create jobs, strengthen the nuclear energy supply chain, and boost industrial capacity. Once completed, the unit will provide stable, round-the-clock power to the naval facility and operate independently of the commercial grid.

Indiana Governor Mike Braun said the reactor will be the first of its kind at a U.S. Navy facility. He said it will position Indiana as a leader in safe power generation with no greenhouse gas emissions.

Braun also said this type of reactor is the same type used on aircraft carriers and submarines.
