Commissioning of the Mt Moss Gold Mine Processing Plant Upgrade in Australia to Begin in Mid-2027

en.Wedoany.com Reported - On September 8, Australia's Sunshine Metals announced progress on the Mt Moss processing plant upgrade. The project design work has been completed, procurement of long-lead equipment has commenced, and the removal of unrelated on-site equipment is proceeding in parallel. The company plans to begin main upgrade construction between October and November 2026, with the goal of entering commissioning in mid-2027. Mt Moss was originally a magnetite and base metals processing plant; this upgrade will add carbon-in-leach (CIL), desorption, and refining equipment, converting it into a dedicated gold processing facility.

The existing Mt Moss processing plant has an annual processing capacity of approximately 300,000 tonnes, is equipped with two ball mills, and is supported by tailings storage facilities, a maintenance workshop, office areas, laydown yards, spare parts facilities, and a 28-room accommodation camp. Sunshine Metals completed the acquisition of the Mt Moss assets for AUD 18 million in July 2026, and subsequently commenced engineering design and restart preparations.

Detech Engineering is responsible for the related engineering design work. The latest progress in September shows that the design phase has been completed, long-lead equipment has entered procurement, and the on-site team has completed inspections of the existing facilities and removed equipment unrelated to the gold processing flow. The existing feed hopper, conveyors, and some structural steel components are scheduled to be refurbished by November.

Sunshine Metals plans to complete tendering for steel structure fabrication, fine ore bin fabrication, and other structural steel works in early October, while also initiating procurement of fuel, cyanide, and grinding consumables. The above procurement will dovetail with the main construction from October to November.

Once the Mt Moss upgrade is completed, it will be used to process ore from the Liontown gold project. Sunshine Metals previously set 2027 as the target time for Liontown's transition to gold production, and Mt Moss's existing 300,000 tonnes per year processing capacity will serve as the basis for first-phase processing.
