Canada's Nano One Advances 25,000-Tonne LFP Cathode Material Project, with Long-Term Expansion Potential to 100,000 Tonnes

en.Wedoany.com Reported - Canada's Nano One Materials has announced the advancement of its first "Canada DevCo" project, with plans to build a 25,000-tonne-per-year lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cathode active material plant in Canada, while reserving conditions for subsequent expansion to up to 100,000 tonnes per year. The project has now initiated site selection assessment, infrastructure condition review, and engagement with customers and strategic partners, marking the entry of its Canadian localized LFP supply chain plan into the preliminary development stage.

The site selection study will focus on evaluating power, utilities, infrastructure conditions, and permitting requirements. Nano One is simultaneously advancing discussions with potential customers, strategic partners, and regional suppliers, with raw material scope including lithium carbonate, phosphoric acid, iron sources, and key production equipment. The company specifically noted that while Canada has a substantial iron ore resource base, whether suitable local iron sources for LFP cathode material production can be secured remains a key focus in supply chain development, and related raw material qualification work is still ongoing.

The first-phase Canada DevCo plant will adopt Nano One's standardized 25,000-tonne-per-year One-Pot LFP CAM production solution. This technology route integrates raw material conversion and cathode material synthesis into a unified design, and project engineering standardization work has already begun. The company stated that future individual projects will be financed through a combination of government funding and private capital, rather than Nano One bearing the full construction capital entirely on its own.

On the raw material side, Nano One is concurrently evaluating lithium, phosphorus, and iron supply channels in Canada and surrounding regions. Potential suppliers have already provided samples to the company for testing and qualification, and subsequent raw material selection will comprehensively assess product quality, technical compatibility, and the ability to meet industrial-scale demand. The project aims to connect upstream raw materials, midstream cathode material production, and downstream battery manufacturing within a regional supply chain to the greatest extent possible.

Canada DevCo will be built on the foundation of Nano One's existing demonstration plant in Candiac, Quebec. The Candiac plant is currently being expanded to approximately 800 tonnes per year of capacity, and as of March 2026 has entered the detailed engineering and major equipment procurement stage. The related engineering and supplier qualification work will also provide scale-up basis for future 25,000-tonne-class standardized plants.

Natural Resources Canada previously provided CAD 3 million in funding to Nano One for LFP cathode material supply chain research and development, process optimization, and scale-up production, as well as to support the qualification of different iron sources in the One-Pot process. The Canada DevCo project further advances the related technologies from the demonstration line and R&D stage toward ten-thousand-tonne-class industrial production.

Nano One plans to focus on serving three major markets: energy storage, electric vehicles, and defense. In its global LFP strategy announced in August, the company proposed advancing localized LFP capacity development in North America and Europe through two models: technology licensing and DevCo. The Canadian project is the first development company project explicitly advanced under this model.
