Canada's CURA Raises $10 Million to Advance Cement Decarbonization Technology

en.Wedoany.com Reported - On September 17, Canadian climate technology company CURA Climate completed a $10 million funding round led by Zacua Ventures, with participation from Sandpiper Ventures, Amplify Capital, and Vantage Futures. The funds will be used to build and commission a 100-ton-per-year cement decarbonization pilot plant, while also carrying out front-end engineering design for a 30,000-ton-per-year commercial demonstration plant and expanding the technical team.

The 100-ton-per-year pilot plant is planned for Taber, Alberta, Canada, and will be advanced through a partnership between CURA and Grand Forks Concrete. According to the technology roadmap listed on CURA's official website, the plant is scheduled to begin operation in December 2026; the company had previously commissioned a 5-kilogram-per-day mini pilot plant in July 2026.

CURA is developing an electrochemical cement production process. The system first generates acid and alkali through water electrolysis, then uses the acid to treat limestone, separating calcium ions from carbon dioxide, and subsequently produces hydrated lime through an alkaline reaction, which is ultimately used as a feedstock in the subsequent cement clinker production stage. The core electrolysis system uses CURA's independently developed CURALYTE electrolyte platform.

The technology targets the process carbon dioxide generated during the limestone calcination stage, completing separation at the front end of the kiln and producing a concentrated carbon dioxide stream for subsequent utilization or storage. Third-party life cycle assessment results published by CURA show that its technology pathway can reduce carbon emissions from cement production by up to approximately 85%.

CURA has partnered with BBA Engineering to carry out conceptual design for the commercial demonstration facility and plans to use this round of funding to further advance the front-end engineering design of the 30,000-ton-per-year plant. The company has also previously signed memoranda of cooperation with Aecon and Acciona, and has listed Grand Forks Concrete as a partner for the pilot and demonstration phases.
