Wedoany.com Report-Jun 27, Prysmian, an Italy-based global power cable manufacturer, has partnered with Inyanga Marine Energy Group, a UK-based company, to supply subsea export cables for the HydroWing tidal energy array at the Morlais site off Anglesey, Wales. The 20 MW project, set for deployment in early 2026, will generate predictable marine energy for the UK grid using seabed-mounted turbines that harness tidal currents.

The Morlais site is one of Europe’s largest consented zones for tidal stream energy. The Welsh Government has supported the project with £8 million in equity investment, supplemented by a £2 million investment in Inyanga. The HydroWing system, which operates similarly to wind turbines but uses ocean currents, leverages the predictable nature of tidal cycles to produce reliable electricity.

Prysmian will manufacture and deliver export cables designed to withstand challenging marine conditions, efficiently transferring power from the subsea turbines to the shore. Massimiliano Tommasini, Vice President of Offshore Specialties at Prysmian, stated: “We are honored to contribute to a project that not only showcases cutting-edge marine engineering but also aligns with our deep commitment to driving the energy transition forward.”

The HydroWing array features a cost-effective design with seabed-mounted structures and turbine-equipped “wings” that generate power during both incoming and outgoing tides. This scalable technology aims to demonstrate tidal energy as a consistent and predictable renewable source for coastal regions, complementing less predictable sources like wind and solar.

Prysmian emphasized its commitment to sustainable practices, noting: “This collaboration reflects Prysmian’s strategy to lead the shift toward cleaner energy. The company is investing heavily in research and development, sustainable manufacturing, and circular economy practices. Its submarine cables are increasingly made with recycled materials and produced using low-impact processes—all part of its goal to reach net-zero emissions by 2035.”

In late 2024, Inyanga Marine Energy unveiled the design for the 20 MW HydroWing project, planned for demonstration at the Morlais site in 2025. The initiative highlights the potential of tidal stream energy to contribute to the UK’s renewable energy goals while fostering innovation in marine energy technology.

This collaboration underscores Prysmian’s role in advancing sustainable energy solutions and supports the development of reliable, clean energy infrastructure in coastal regions.
