Innophos of the United States Plans to Expand Battery-Grade Iron Phosphate Material Capacity

en.Wedoany.com Reported - On September 21, Innophos, a U.S. specialty phosphate producer, announced the expansion of its North American battery-grade phosphate business, with plans to produce iron phosphate and sodium iron phosphate (NFPP) in Nashville, Tennessee, targeting lithium iron phosphate batteries and next-generation sodium-ion batteries, respectively. The company has already expanded its high-purity phosphoric acid production capacity in the United States and plans to further increase battery-grade phosphate material capacity at its Nashville site by 2028.

This capacity expansion focuses on two types of materials. Iron phosphate will serve as a precursor for lithium iron phosphate cathode material production, serving new energy vehicles and stationary energy storage batteries; sodium iron phosphate targets sodium-ion battery systems. Innophos has incorporated battery-grade phosphates into its VOLTIX product system and is advancing production of related materials based on its existing North American phosphoric acid production and deep-processing facilities.

Innophos has continuously expanded its U.S. high-purity phosphoric acid capacity over the past several years and will now further extend into downstream battery materials such as iron phosphate and sodium iron phosphate. The company currently operates 8 manufacturing plants in North America, with its production system covering the United States, Mexico, and Canada, providing high-purity phosphoric acid and various phosphate products. Over the past 5 years, Innophos's cumulative investment in North American manufacturing assets has exceeded $100 million.

Innophos launched the VOLTIX battery materials brand in 2024, with products covering battery-grade phosphoric acid, monoammonium phosphate, diammonium phosphate, and other phosphates, which can be used in lithium iron phosphate cathode and lithium hexafluorophosphate electrolyte-related production. This round of Nashville capacity expansion will add iron phosphate and NFPP material manufacturing capability on the basis of the existing high-purity phosphoric acid raw material system.

The new capacity at the Nashville site is planned to be gradually established by 2028. Innophos has not yet disclosed the specific scale of new capacity, project investment amount, equipment configuration, start of construction, or production timeline.
