Demeter Advances 100,000 tpy Bio-Methanol and 200,000 tpy Carbon Capture Project in the United States
en.Wedoany.com Reported - On September 22, Demeter Energy of the United States disclosed that its commercial-scale bio-methanol and carbon capture project in Manatee County, Florida, continues to advance. The project is planned to produce approximately 100,000 tonnes per year of bio-methanol while capturing and permanently sequestering approximately 200,000 tonnes per year of biogenic carbon dioxide. Engineering design, permitting, environmental assessment, commercial contracts, feedstock procurement, logistics planning, and financing are currently being advanced in parallel, and the project is moving toward the final investment decision stage.

The project plans to use sustainably sourced biomass to produce low-carbon bio-methanol, with feedstocks including woody biomass, urban wood, and green waste generated in Florida and the southeastern United States. The standard single-plant design capacity announced by Demeter Energy is approximately 100,000 tonnes per year of bio-methanol, along with capture of approximately 200,000 tonnes per year of high-purity biogenic carbon dioxide. The company adopts a modular process platform and plans to implement construction through a Design-Build EPC model.
The project is intended to be located at SeaPort Manatee. The port area is situated at the entrance to Tampa Bay and has direct access to Gulf of Mexico and Panama Canal shipping routes. The bio-methanol produced by the project is planned to target the marine fuel, sustainable aviation fuel feedstock, and low-carbon chemical feedstock markets, and the port's existing logistics and handling facilities will be used for feedstock inbound transport and product outbound shipment.
The carbon capture portion will be built in sync with the bio-methanol production facility. Demeter plans to capture biogenic carbon dioxide during the methanol production process and to build supporting post-treatment and outbound transport systems. Demeter has signed a memorandum of cooperation with Aptamus Carbon Solutions, under which the latter will study the construction of a carbon dioxide marine terminal at SeaPort Manatee, responsible for liquefaction, ship loading, and maritime transport scheme design. The captured liquefied carbon dioxide is intended to be shipped to Texas or Louisiana for permanent geological sequestration or use in enhanced oil recovery.
Under the current plan between the two parties, Aptamus will also study the construction of a Jones Act vessel capable of transporting both bio-methanol and liquefied carbon dioxide. The vessel is currently in the transition stage from concept to preliminary design and is expected to adopt an articulated tug-barge structure with separate tanks for methanol and liquefied carbon dioxide. The investment amounts for the related terminal and vessel have not yet been disclosed.
Demeter has not yet disclosed the total project investment, official construction start date, or production start date. The company has made clear that its current priorities include engineering design, permitting, environmental review, long-term commercial contracts, feedstock security, logistics systems, and project financing, and that it will proceed to the final investment decision after these tasks are completed.
