CGC's Little Narrows Gypsum Mine in Canada Completes First Shipment, Full Production Set for Spring 2027

en.Wedoany.com Reported - On September 23, CGC announced that the Little Narrows gypsum mine located in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, Canada, completed its first shipment of gypsum rock, marking the project's transition from the construction phase to phased operational commissioning. The first batch of product was shipped to CGC's Montreal manufacturing facility. Subsequent commissioning phases will conduct real-world operating tests on the mine, crushing and conveying systems, dock, and shiploading system. The project is scheduled to enter full operation in spring 2027.

The Little Narrows project represents a total investment of CAD 104 million. The scope of renovation includes a new 600-foot dock, shiploader, crushing and conveying systems, as well as open-pit mining equipment including drills, loaders, excavators, and mining trucks. The mine has previously completed its first blast, and the new employee facilities have been put into use. The shiploading system has now entered the phase of actual operational verification with this first shipment of gypsum rock.

Once the project reaches full production, the Little Narrows gypsum mine will have an annual production and shipping capacity of up to 2 million tonnes. Products will be supplied by water to CGC's manufacturing facilities in Eastern Canada and to production facilities on the U.S. East Coast operated by its parent company USG, for use in the production of building materials such as gypsum board. Upon full operation, the mine is expected to provide more than 100 long-term jobs.

The historical operation of the Little Narrows gypsum mine dates back to 1954, with the original production ceasing in 2016. CGC announced in 2023 an investment of CAD 104 million to restart and modernize the mine, with a construction period estimated at approximately 3 years. In December 2025, the project completed the main structure of the 600-foot dock, followed by the advancement of shiploader construction; in 2026, employee facilities were completed and recruitment was carried out. This first shipment of gypsum rock constitutes the first actual shipping milestone since the project's restart.

The Little Narrows project is also part of CGC and USG's approximately CAD 325 million investment plan in Canada in recent years. In addition to this mine, CGC has already opened a CAD 210 million gypsum board manufacturing plant in Wheatland County, Alberta, this year. Once the Little Narrows gypsum mine is in production, its raw materials will primarily feed into the gypsum building materials production network in Eastern Canada and the U.S. East Coast.
