First TBM of Manila Metro CP102 in the Philippines Breaks Through

en.Wedoany.com Reported - On September 23, the first tunnel boring machine (TBM) of Contract Package CP102 of Phase 1 of the Manila Metro in the Philippines achieved breakthrough at Quezon Avenue Station, completing the tunnel excavation for the North Avenue to Quezon Avenue section. This is the first TBM breakthrough milestone for CP102, marking the entry of the contract's underground tunnel construction into the next phase.

CP102 is being constructed by a joint venture comprising Nishimatsu Construction and D.M. Consunji, with the project owner being the Department of Transportation of the Philippines. The contract mainly involves the construction of two underground stations, Quezon Avenue and East Avenue, as well as underground tunnels connecting North Avenue, Quezon Avenue, and East Avenue, with a TBM launch shaft at North Avenue. The total tunnel length of the contract is approximately 3 kilometers, with an overall construction period of about 5.5 years.

This breakthrough corresponds to the first TBM tunnel in the North Avenue to Quezon Avenue direction. According to official Philippine disclosures, the total length of the two stations and associated tunnel works under CP102 is approximately 3.16 kilometers. With the first TBM arriving at Quezon Avenue Station, excavation of other TBM sections, construction of station main structures, and underground ancillary works will continue to be advanced.

Phase 1 of the Manila Metro is planned to include 17 stations, with a total project investment of approximately 488.48 billion Philippine pesos, and the overall construction progress is currently about 60%. Project funding mainly comes from loans from the Japan International Cooperation Agency and counterpart funding from the Philippine government. Once completed, the project will connect Valenzuela City with the Ninoy Aquino International Airport area.

The CP102 contract was signed in 2022, with the scope of work including two underground stations and running tunnels.
