The "Nuclear Diesel No. 1" 6MW-class unit independently developed by China State Shipbuilding Corporation Power Group was released in Shanghai, with comprehensive performance reaching internationally advanced levels
en.Wedoany.com Reported - On September 22, a reliability improvement exchange meeting for nuclear power diesel generator sets, themed "Pooling efforts to promote high-quality development of the nuclear energy industry and continuously strengthen the nuclear power safety defense line," was held in Shanghai. At the meeting, China State Shipbuilding Corporation Power Group grandly released China's first independently developed "Nuclear Diesel No. 1" 6MW-class nuclear power emergency diesel generator set. At the same time, the Nuclear Power Service Center of CSSC Hudong Heavy Machinery, a subsidiary of China State Shipbuilding Corporation Power Group, was officially inaugurated. This marks that China has fully mastered the core technologies for independent design, research and development, and manufacturing of this class of unit, filling the gap in the independent development of high-power emergency power equipment for nuclear power, which will significantly enhance China's nuclear power plant accident emergency response and safe operation and maintenance capabilities, and further consolidate the foundation for the localization and independent development of key supporting equipment for China's nuclear power industry.

Nuclear power emergency diesel generator sets are core critical facilities in the defense-in-depth safety system of nuclear power plants, shouldering the important mission of safe shutdown, containing accident escalation, and reducing accident impact under accident conditions at the plant. As a core marine power supporting enterprise under China State Shipbuilding Corporation Limited, China State Shipbuilding Corporation Power Group shoulders the responsibility and commitment of serving the national strategy and striving to be a vanguard of "smart power, industry serving the country." It has always controlled the entire product life cycle with the highest standards and strictest requirements, adhering to the concept of full life-cycle reliability design, and improving the reliability indicators and margins of emergency diesel engines from the design source.

Relying on a mature and stable product research and development, manufacturing, and supply chain system, China State Shipbuilding Corporation Power Group fully leverages its internal resource integration advantages, coordinating and making good use of high-quality internal scientific research and industrial resources such as CSSC Hudong Heavy Machinery, CSSC Power Research Institute, CSSC Power Components, and CSSC Modern. Systematic reliability design was carried out at the outset of development, and iterative optimization was continuously conducted in combination with data from all stages of design, manufacturing, and testing. After two years of dedicated technical research and repeated refinement, more than 1,000 hours of reliability testing, special evaluations, and sufficient verification were completed cumulatively, greatly improving product operational stability. In parallel, a diversified, safe, reliable, and efficient supply chain system was built, effectively resolving technical barriers and supply constraints. The unit is equipped with an advanced fault monitoring system that enables intelligent health management and precise maintenance, with intelligent operation and maintenance levels ranking among the industry's leading positions.

It is understood that in terms of performance parameters, the unit's comprehensive strength is fully benchmarked against internationally advanced levels: the diesel engine has a power of 7,000 kW at 100% operating conditions, the unit has a power of 6,600 kW at 100% power, the unit startup time is less than 10 seconds, the mean time between failures is greater than 2,000 hours, and the mean time to repair of the diesel engine is less than 4 hours. It has significant advantages such as fast startup response, high operational reliability, strong load-carrying capacity, and convenient operation and maintenance.
As nuclear power units successively enter peak maintenance periods, the traditional decentralized maintenance model has become increasingly difficult to adapt to the new situation and new requirements of nuclear power safety, especially with shortcomings such as insufficient on-site maintenance capacity, delayed spare parts supply, and long maintenance cycles becoming increasingly prominent. To this end, China State Shipbuilding Corporation Power Group, focusing on the construction of a nuclear power service support system, specially established the CSSC Hudong Heavy Machinery Nuclear Power Service Center. Driven by innovation in technology and service models, the center will build a service platform integrating "rapid spare parts supply, precision maintenance, cyclic reuse, skills training, and brand display," forming a service network centered in Shanghai and radiating across the country, strengthening the nuclear power safety defense line.
At present, China's nuclear power industry is in a period of strategic opportunity for proactive, safe, and orderly development. The Outline of the 15th Five-Year Plan clearly proposes adhering to the multi-energy approach of "wind, solar, hydro, and nuclear" and actively, safely, and orderly developing nuclear power. As of the end of July this year, China had 120 nuclear power units in operation and approved for construction, with a total installed capacity of approximately 135 million kW, ranking first in the world in terms of nuclear power scale in operation and under construction.
The newly released "Nuclear Diesel No. 1" 6MW-class nuclear power emergency diesel generator set complements the 8MW-class unit launched in December 2024, and will further improve the product spectrum of the "Nuclear Diesel No. 1" nuclear power emergency diesel generator sets to meet differentiated application needs and broaden the application scenarios of nuclear power emergency power equipment.
