Tesla Opens Powerwall 3 and Powerwall 2 Hybrid Expansion in Australia

Through the latest software update, eligible Powerwall 2 users can directly add a Powerwall 3 to expand storage capacity without removing their existing battery system. Existing equipment must be upgraded to software version 26.26 or higher, and installation must be completed by a Tesla-certified installer.

The first supported configurations announced by Tesla can include up to 4 Powerwall 2 units, 1 Powerwall 3, and 3 Powerwall 3 Expansion units. When a Powerwall 3 is added to an existing system, it will operate as the site controller, while the Backup Gateway 2 continues to handle islanded operation control and site metering. The Powerwall 2, Powerwall 3, and Expansion units in a hybrid system can operate in coordination to increase home energy storage capacity and backup power capability.

A single Powerwall 3 has a usable energy storage capacity of 13.5 kWh and a continuous output power of approximately 11.5 kW; each Powerwall 3 Expansion adds another 13.5 kWh of storage capacity. Under Tesla's currently announced configuration limits, an existing Powerwall 2 system can add at most 1 Powerwall 3 and 3 Expansion units. For three-phase grid connection scenarios, Powerwall 3 output power will be limited to 5 kW.

This compatibility update changes the initial configuration approach in which Powerwall 3 only supported expansion with same-generation devices. After the launch of Powerwall 3, because its internal architecture, communication protocols, and system integration method differ from those of Powerwall 2, the two generations could not previously be directly combined into the same energy storage system. Tesla's technical documents updated on September 17 adjusted the software requirement for hybrid Powerwall 2 and Powerwall 3 systems to version 26.26 or higher and provided the corresponding installation and upgrade procedures.

Regarding compliance and warranty, existing Powerwall 2 units retain their original warranty, while newly installed Powerwall 3 and Powerwall 3 Expansion units each carry a 10-year warranty. When adding a Powerwall 3 to an existing Powerwall 2 system, only the newly added equipment needs to meet the current Clean Energy Council product listing requirements in Australia, and the existing Powerwall 2 system can retain its current compliance status.
