en.Wedoany.com Reported - On October 20, US composite materials manufacturer Helicon Industries announced the completion of a $16.5 million seed round of financing, led by investment firm AlleyCorp, with participation from Buckley Ventures, Mike Chalfen, and several individual investors. The funding will be used to expand its automated composite materials production line and technical team in Torrance, California, with a focus on producing lightweight structural components for Class I to Class III unmanned aerial vehicles. The company's existing facility covers approximately 36,000 square feet and is currently scaling up production capacity.

Helicon's manufacturing system integrates artificial intelligence software, robotics, and composite materials processing equipment, covering component engineering design, tooling development, manufacturing, inspection, and production planning. Its Argos software is capable of handling design solutions for different parts within the same production facility, coordinating with robots to complete material layup, part demolding, and trimming, and feeding back manufacturing data through automated inspection processes. The company's initial priority products include small UAV frames and other structural components for unmanned systems.

According to the production schedule published by the company, the Torrance facility is expanding its volume manufacturing capability. Helicon co-founder and CEO Alex Niehaus stated that after production expansion, the existing facility has the potential capacity to produce more than 1 million units of Class I to Class II small UAV frames per year. The company is currently working with fewer than 10 customers with high-volume demand on production expansion. This capacity figure represents the facility's expansion target, not its current actual annual output.

In terms of delivery, Helicon's current lead time for composite material parts is approximately 4 to 6 weeks, with plans to reduce it to two weeks within the next six months. The company's externally offered manufacturing services span aerial, ground, and maritime unmanned systems, covering structural component applications for small quadrotor UAVs, unmanned ground vehicles, and autonomous underwater vehicles. Its product engineering process supports design for various geometries, manufacturing plan adjustments, and volume production.

Individual investors participating in this financing round include Gokul Rajaram, Eileen Tanghal, Charlie Songhurst, Lucas Vaz, Fredrik Hjelm, and Pablo Palafox. The funding will be used to expand the automated production line and workforce, while supporting the development of design software for composite material parts, robotic operations, and production inspection systems.
