en.Wedoany.com Reported - On October 27, the U.S. Department of Energy offered Constellation Energy a conditional loan commitment of up to $5 billion to support capacity upgrades and modernization of existing nuclear power plants in Illinois, Maryland, and Pennsylvania. The financing covers eight nuclear facilities, and the related upgrade plans will add nearly 1,100 megawatts of nuclear generating capacity.

The loan support covers the Braidwood, Byron, Clinton, Dresden, LaSalle, and Quad Cities nuclear power plants in Illinois, the Calvert Cliffs nuclear power plant in Maryland, and the Limerick nuclear power plant in Pennsylvania. The financing arrangement also includes options to support subsequent capacity upgrade projects at other Constellation Energy nuclear facilities.

U.S. Secretary of Energy Chris Wright said at the Byron nuclear power plant in Illinois that the site currently has two reactors with total installed capacity of nearly 2,350 megawatts and plans to add about 150 megawatts of generating capacity by replacing equipment such as turbines. The upgrade will use existing reactors and plant infrastructure to increase unit power output.

Constellation Energy's 20-year power purchase agreements with Google and Amazon have already driven the company to formulate an investment plan of more than $7 billion, involving about 1,080 megawatts of new nuclear capacity. The company's previously reached agreement with Meta also supports adding 30 megawatts of generating capacity at the Clinton nuclear power plant in Illinois.

Under the loan arrangement, Constellation Energy must also complete reviews of technical, legal, environmental, and financial conditions and negotiate final financing documents. The company will determine the implementation arrangements for specific capacity upgrade projects separately based on financing conditions and the circumstances of each project.
