Daewoo Engineering & Construction Wins Order for Nigeria's Fourth Fertilizer Production Line

en.Wedoany.com Reported - On November 4, Daewoo Engineering & Construction received a Letter of Award (LOA) for the Indorama Fertilizer Train 4 project in Nigeria, with a contract value of approximately KRW 350 billion. The project owner is IF FZE, a Nigerian subsidiary of global petrochemical company Indorama, and the production facilities will be built in the Eleme Industrial Park in Rivers State, Nigeria. Daewoo Engineering & Construction will serve as the main contractor and be responsible for the construction of the relevant units.

The project, named Indorama Fertilizer Train 4, is planned to include a 2,300-ton-per-day ammonia plant and a 4,000-ton-per-day granular urea plant. According to project materials published by the African Development Bank on October 27, 2026, once the fourth production line is operational, the annual urea production capacity of the Indorama fertilizer complex will increase from the current approximately 4.2 million tons to 5.6 million tons, adding approximately 1.4 million tons of new capacity. The new facilities will be built within the existing industrial park, with a planned site area of approximately 80 hectares, requiring no additional land acquisition.

The project uses natural gas as feedstock, producing hydrogen through steam reforming and separating nitrogen from the air; the ammonia is then synthesized and reacted with carbon dioxide generated during the steam reforming process to produce granular urea. In addition to the ammonia and urea units, the production facilities also involve gas treatment, utilities, product storage, and loading and unloading facilities. According to project materials disclosed by the International Finance Corporation (IFC), the overall expansion plan also includes the construction of approximately 65 kilometers of natural gas transmission pipelines to connect to the existing natural gas supply network.

The African Development Bank disclosed that the expansion plan includes expanding the existing product loading, unloading, and storage facilities at Onne Port, adding urea warehouses, truck unloading and conveying equipment, and extending the existing jetty to meet the export transportation demand for the additional urea output. The above-mentioned pipeline and port facilities are part of the supporting plans for the overall Train 4 project, and publicly available materials have not yet clarified item by item whether all of them are included within the scope of Daewoo Engineering & Construction's current award contract.

The award of the fourth production line order continues the cooperative relationship between Daewoo Engineering & Construction and Indorama. Previously, Daewoo Engineering & Construction had participated in the construction of Indorama's first three fertilizer production lines and related supporting facilities in Nigeria. Among them, the third production line was completed in 2026, configured with a production capacity of 2,300 tons per day of ammonia and 4,000 tons per day of urea. The smooth delivery of that project and the early completion of key construction milestones laid the foundation for Daewoo Engineering & Construction to secure subsequent orders.

Since entering the Nigerian market in 1983, Daewoo Engineering & Construction has undertaken 75 projects locally, with cumulative project value of approximately USD 10.8 billion. The award of the fourth fertilizer production line order will further expand its business scale in Nigeria's chemical plant construction market and continue its project footprint in the local fertilizer and natural gas-related engineering sector.
