Ericsson and HBL Complete 5G Integration Test for Railway Protection System
en.Wedoany.com Reported - On November 5, Swedish communications equipment company Ericsson and Indian engineering technology company HBL completed integration validation of India's Kavach 4.0 Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system with a 5G Standalone (5G SA) environment at a research and development laboratory in Hyderabad. The test combined a train protection system already certified to the highest Safety Integrity Level, SIL-4, with 5G network technology, validating the integration and interoperability of the two systems under laboratory conditions and providing a technical validation basis for subsequent upgrades of railway mobile communication systems.

The integration used HBL's Kavach 4.0 automatic train protection technology and 5G standalone capabilities provided by Ericsson. The testing focused on the interoperability between train protection functions and the mobile communication network, as well as performance evaluation of relevant railway communication services in a 5G network environment. The two companies are using the laboratory results as a basis for evaluating the technology roadmap for Future Railway Mobile Communication System (FRMCS).
The Kavach 4.0 system involved in the integration features continuous train movement monitoring, protection against passing danger signals, train collision prevention, and direct connection to electronic interlocking systems. The system also supports safety protection in the event of train driver errors, fatigue, or distraction, and can provide train operation protection in low-visibility conditions such as dense winter fog. The integration validation used the system's existing train protection capabilities.
Ericsson and HBL have also identified the applicability of 5G standalone in railway signaling transmission, mission-critical voice communication, video and data transmission, onboard camera monitoring, and predictive maintenance as directions for subsequent evaluation. The related network solutions involve communication encryption, device identity authentication, continuous threat detection, and secure device management, and will undergo security assessment incorporating zero-trust mechanisms and network resilience measures.
Mayank Bhargava, Head of Emerging Business and Public Sector at Ericsson India, stated that the integration work will be used to study the capability of 5G standalone to support next-generation railway communications and mission-critical services. Subsequent technical evaluations by both parties will focus on system interoperability, service performance, and the applicability of railway communication architecture evolution toward FRMCS.
