Wedoany.com Report-Sept. 6, Spain’s Ferrovial has announced a $355 million investment to construct and operate a 250MW utility-scale solar photovoltaic (PV) facility in Milam County, Texas. The project reflects expectations of rising energy demand driven by the rapid growth of data centres.
Solar PV plant near Austin, Texas. Ten utility-scale solar plants have come online so far this year in the state
Once operational in 2027, the plant is projected to generate 450 gigawatt hours (GWh) of electricity annually, supplying enough energy to power about 43,000 homes. According to the US Energy Information Administration, a utility-scale solar project is defined as one with a generating capacity of at least 1MW.
Texas has already seen notable growth in this sector. Research company Cleanview reported that ten new utility-scale solar plants have entered operation in the state this year, with capacities ranging from 4MW to the 600MW Hornet Solar project in Swisher County, currently the largest in Texas.
Ferrovial Energy CEO María José Esteruelas commented: “As data centres multiply and energy needs continue to increase, this facility will bring lasting value to the region by creating jobs, supporting local services and strengthening energy reliability.”
Construction of the Milam County solar facility is set to begin in the coming months. The project will create approximately 300 jobs during the construction phase, offering a boost to local employment and associated services. Beyond the construction period, the plant is expected to contribute to the long-term stability of the Texas electricity grid by delivering renewable power.
This is not Ferrovial’s first solar development in Texas. In May of last year, the company began construction on its initial self-developed solar plant in the state, marking its entry into the US renewable energy market. The new Milam County project builds on that experience and expands Ferrovial’s footprint in one of the country’s fastest-growing renewable energy markets.
The project highlights Texas’s expanding role as a hub for renewable power development. With increasing electricity demand from both households and energy-intensive sectors such as digital infrastructure, large-scale renewable projects like this one are viewed as critical to meeting future needs.
Ferrovial’s investment also underscores the continuing global interest in US renewable energy opportunities, particularly in regions with strong solar resources and established energy markets. The Milam County facility is expected to play a role in strengthening energy reliability in the region while advancing broader goals for sustainable energy development.
By combining large-scale generation capacity with local job creation, the project demonstrates how renewable energy investments can deliver both economic and environmental benefits. Ferrovial’s commitment to Texas marks another step in the state’s ongoing transformation into a leader in utility-scale solar energy.
