Qatarenergy Signs Contract With Samsung to Build Dukhan Solar Power Plant, One of the World’s Largest

Wedoany.com Report-Sept. 16, QatarEnergy has signed an agreement with Samsung C&T’s Engineering & Construction Group for the construction of a large-scale solar power facility in Dukhan, located about 80 kilometers west of Doha. The project, which will be one of the largest solar power plants in the world, will be developed in two phases with a planned total capacity of 2,000 megawatts (MW) by mid-2029. Once operational, it will double Qatar’s solar power capacity and play an important role in the nation’s renewable energy expansion.

The signing ceremony took place at QatarEnergy’s headquarters in Doha, attended by His Excellency Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi, Minister of State for Energy Affairs and President and CEO of QatarEnergy, along with Sechul Oh, President & CEO of Samsung C&T. Also present were HE Abdulla bin Ali Al-Theyab, President of Kahramaa, and senior representatives of both companies.

Speaking on the occasion, His Excellency Minister Al-Kaabi stated: “This agreement is an important milestone in our effort to manage the environment in a manner that balances economic and social development with environmental protection, as stipulated by Qatar National Vision 2030. It also supports one of the key goals of QatarEnergy’s Sustainability Strategy, which is to generate more than 4,000 megawatts of renewable energy by 2030.”

He added: “When completed, the Dukhan solar power plant, along with Al-Kharsaah, Mesaieed, and Ras Laffan solar power plants, will help reduce carbon dioxide emissions by about 4.7 million tons annually, while contributing up to 30% of Qatar’s total peak electricity demand. We are pleased to collaborate with Samsung C&T to help achieve this vision.”

The Dukhan project will be implemented in stages. The first phase is scheduled to deliver 1,000 MW of electricity to the KAHRAMAA grid by late 2028. The facility will employ advanced solar tracker technology and high-performance inverters designed to withstand high-temperature conditions, ensuring stable and efficient power output.

As part of its broader energy transition strategy, QatarEnergy continues to expand renewable capacity while aligning with national objectives for sustainable growth. The Dukhan solar power plant is set to become a central contributor to these efforts, reinforcing the role of renewable energy in meeting future demand.
