Wedoany.com Report-Sept. 30, Jindal Steel Limited (JSL) has commissioned a new 5 million mt per year blast furnace at its Angul steel mill in Odisha, part of its $2.56 billion expansion project, the company announced on Monday, September 29, 2025.
With the addition of this blast furnace, the production capacity of the Angul mill has doubled to 9 million mt per year. Once the full expansion program is completed, the plant is expected to reach 12 million mt per year, reinforcing its position as one of India’s largest integrated steel facilities.
The newly launched blast furnace, named “Bhagavati Subhadrika II”, has a useful volume of 5,499 m³, ranking it among the largest and most advanced blast furnaces globally, according to JSL. The furnace incorporates modern technology aimed at optimizing production efficiency and supporting high-quality steel output.
JSL outlined a future expansion roadmap at Angul, which includes the development of a dedicated port at Paradeep, Odisha, to improve export and import logistics. The plan also features a slurry pipeline and coal pipe conveyor to enhance supply chain efficiency, alongside a new power plant and coke oven facilities to support integrated steel production.
The company stated that these investments aim to strengthen its production capabilities and meet India’s growing steel demand, ensuring the mill remains competitive in both domestic and international markets.
This milestone at Angul reflects JSL’s ongoing strategic focus on scaling up integrated steel production through technological advancement and infrastructure enhancement. The commissioning of “Bhagavati Subhadrika II” represents a significant step toward achieving the plant’s full planned capacity of 12 million mt per year.
By expanding both production and supporting infrastructure, JSL aims to improve operational efficiency, reduce supply chain bottlenecks, and maintain high-quality output. The company’s plans for port development, energy facilities, and advanced material handling systems indicate a comprehensive approach to long-term growth.
JSL’s Angul expansion project highlights the company’s commitment to sustainable, large-scale steel production in India. With the integration of modern blast furnace technology and enhanced logistics infrastructure, the plant is expected to play a key role in supporting industrial growth and domestic steel requirements in the coming years.
