Wedoany.com Report-Oct. 11, The geological services of Russia and Belarus have finalized a bridging document to align their national classifications for mineral reserves and resources, according to Russia’s State Commission for Mineral Reserves (GKZ). This agreement facilitates seamless cooperation in geological assessments and resource management between the two nations.
“The document will make it possible to develop common instruments and methodological fundamentals for the introduction of best practices in our countries. Now it is possible to ‘translate’ estimates, design solutions and reporting from one system to the other without losses and distortions. This not only removes barriers in cooperation, but also opens up new horizons for other CIS and BRICS countries,” the GKZ announced in a statement shared on Telegram.
This harmonized system streamlines the exchange of expertise, technology, and services, reducing unnecessary costs and simplifying the planning of geological exploration and deposit development. It also enhances the transparency of appraisal processes, fostering greater trust and efficiency in joint ventures.
The initiative saw contributions from Belorusneft and PJSC Gazprom, which supported the development of the framework for aligning the classification systems. Their involvement underscores the collaborative effort to strengthen resource management practices across borders.
Igor Shpurov, head of the GKZ, noted earlier in 2024 that Russia is also pursuing similar harmonization efforts with other nations, including Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan, using the United Nations framework classification as a basis. Interest in this initiative has also emerged from African countries and India, indicating potential for broader international collaboration.
The agreement marks a significant step toward standardizing mineral reserve assessments, enabling more efficient cross-border projects. By establishing a unified approach, Russia and Belarus aim to enhance the accuracy of resource estimates and optimize development strategies, benefiting their respective industries.
