Wedoany.com Report-Nov. 2, Woodside Energy Group Ltd has awarded Tenaris SA a contract to supply casing and tubing for the Trion oilfield in Mexican waters, marking a key step in the development of the offshore project. The Luxembourg-based industrial and energy pipe contractor also confirmed it will provide line pipe and coatings for bends, flowlines, and risers as part of the project’s subsea infrastructure.

Woodside awarded Tenaris a contract for the supply of casing and tubing for the Trion oilfield in Mexican waters.

Under the Rig Direct® service model, Tenaris will deliver 12,000 tons of casing and tubing, including 1,600 tons in the Super 13 Chrome steel grade. For the line pipe segment, the company will supply approximately 16,000 tons of pipe for flowlines and risers. Coatings will include TenarisShawcor Marine 5-Layer Syntactic and Solid Polypropylene for flow assurance, along with Fusion Bonded Epoxy, Three-Layer Polypropylene, and Liquid Epoxy for corrosion protection. Line pipe and coatings will be provided together with Tenaris’s One Line® project solutions.

Pablo Gomez, Tenaris commercial vice president in Mexico, said: “This project underscores the strength of our customer partnerships and our ability to deliver advanced technological solutions for the most demanding offshore environments.”

Trion is expected to begin production in 2028, primarily targeting overseas markets. Woodside, which holds a 60 percent stake in the project, made the final investment decision (FID) in 2023. That year, it also received approval from Mexico’s National Hydrocarbons Commission and secured an agreement with 40 percent partner Petroleos Mexicanos (Pemex), which discovered Trion in 2012, to invest $7.2 billion in capital.

Following approval of the field development plan (FDP), Woodside reported proved (1P) undeveloped reserves of 324.7 million barrels of oil equivalent (MMboe) gross, with 194.8 MMboe as Woodside’s share. Proved plus probable (2P) undeveloped reserves total 478.7 MMboe gross, with 287.2 MMboe attributed to Woodside. These reserves will be developed using a floating production unit (FPU) with a capacity of 100,000 barrels per day, linked to a floating storage and offloading vessel (FSO) holding 950,000 barrels.

The initial drilling phase includes 18 wells—nine production wells, seven water injectors, and two gas injectors—with a total of 24 wells planned over the field’s life. Trion is located 180 kilometers off the Mexican coast and 30 kilometers south of the Mexico–United States maritime border.

Prior to Tenaris, Woodside awarded the FPU engineering, procurement, and construction contract to HD Hyundai Heavy Industries Co Ltd. SBM Offshore NV received contracts for FPU installation and FSO construction, Transocean Ltd for the rig, and OneSubsea UK Ltd for underwater trees. On March 31, 2025, SLB Ltd was engaged to oversee delivery of 18 ultra-deepwater wells over three years, providing digital directional drilling services, logging while drilling, surface logging, cementing, drilling and completions fluids, completions, and wireline services.

The Tenaris contract reinforces the coordinated effort to advance Trion’s offshore development with integrated technology and comprehensive project execution, supporting Woodside’s strategy to bring the field into production efficiently and safely while targeting global markets.
