en.Wedoany.com Reported -Nexans has completed the initial cable pulling operation for the 700 MW Celtic Interconnector project in France. Previously, the company had carried out similar operations in Ireland.

The Celtic Interconnector project, jointly developed by French transmission system operator RTE and its Irish counterpart EirGrid, aims to facilitate electricity exchange between the two countries, supplying power to approximately 450,000 households. EirGrid Chief Financial Officer Michael Behan said: “Reaching this latest milestone on the French side is a significant step forward for the Celtic Interconnector project and reflects the strong progress and continued close cooperation between the French and Irish teams.”

The project spans approximately 575 km, extending from La Martyre in Brittany, France, to East Cork, Ireland. It uses 320 kV high-voltage direct current (HVDC) technology, including about 500 km of submarine cables, about 40 km of underground cables in France, and about 35 km of underground cables in Ireland. Nexans is responsible for the engineering, manufacturing, and installation of the entire cable system; the high-voltage cables are produced in Norway, the onshore cables come from Belgium, and the accessories are manufactured in Switzerland.

Pascal Radue, Executive Vice President of Nexans’ PWR Transmission Business Group, said: “The Celtic Interconnector project is an iconic project for European energy infrastructure and a powerful example of how interconnectors support Europe’s electrification. This pulling operation marks another important step in the project’s delivery, which will enhance energy resilience and promote greater cross-border integration of renewable energy.”

The Celtic Interconnector is designated as a Project of Common Interest by the European Union and is critical to strengthening a more integrated European energy system.
