Brazil's Abrate Invests R$5 Million to Support R&D on Grid Climate Resilience
en.Wedoany.com Reported - The Brazilian Association of Electric Power Transmission Companies (Abrate) will invest R$5 million to support research, development, and innovation (PD&I) projects focused on climate resilience for transmission systems. The funds will be executed by the Abrate Institute (Instituto Abrate) over the next 17 months, with a focus on developing standards, methods, and tools to enhance the grid's capacity to withstand extreme weather events.

The announcement was made by the association's president, Talita Porto, at an event held this Thursday (20th) in Brasília. Organized by Brazil's National Electric Energy Agency (ANEEL), the event addressed the impacts of the "Super El Niño" phenomenon on the power sector, bringing together representatives from industry, academia, and government to discuss response strategies and contingency plans for the National Interconnected System (SIN).
During the event, Abrate also unveiled an investment outlook of R$9 billion for the next transmission auction (Leilão 4/2026). This amount adds to the approximately R$92 billion already contracted for new transmission projects in auctions held by ANEEL between 2022 and the first half of 2026.
Talita Porto stated that extreme weather events can have physical, operational, and financial impacts on transmission assets, weakening companies' investment capacity. She advocated that investments in enhancing asset resilience should be recognized within the regulatory framework to ensure the security and reliability of the power system.
"The impacts of extreme weather events are not limited to the physical and operational spheres; they also generate significant financial effects that directly affect the industry's investment capacity. In this context, it is essential to deepen the discussion on recognizing investments in climate resilience for assets, ensuring the system's safety and reliability," she said.
