Wedoany.com Report-Oct. 29, Metso Corp. (Espoo, Finland) has secured an order to deliver a third iron ore sintering plant for Steel Authority of India Ltd. (SAIL) at the IISCO Steel Plant (ISP) in Asansol, West Bengal. The order, recognized in Metso’s Ferrous business during Q3 2025, is valued at approximately EUR 32 million. The Ferrous business is currently being divested and is reported as discontinued operations.

The contract covers full engineering, equipment supply, and supervision of installation and commissioning for the new sintering plant. Designed with a capacity of 2.67 million tonnes per annum, the plant forms part of SAIL ISP’s 4MTPA crude steel expansion project. It will feature Metso’s Emission Optimised Sintering (EOS) technology, aimed at reducing solid fuel consumption and cutting CO2 emissions by more than 54,000 tonnes annually. The plant is expected to begin operations in 2029, supporting India’s focus on efficient and sustainable steel production.

“Together, we are taking a decisive step towards low-carbon steelmaking,” said Surajit Mishra, Director-In-Charge of Burnpur and Durgapur Steel Plant, SAIL.

Attaul Ahmad, Vice President of Ferrous & Heat Transfer at Metso, added: “We are pleased to partner with SAIL on their landmark project, which underscores our commitment to advancing sustainable steel production. We are happy that the project incorporates our EOS technology, which will help SAIL ISP’s ongoing commitment to environmental sustainability and energy efficiency.”

Metso’s EOS technology is designed to optimize energy use and emissions in sintering, supporting both operational efficiency and environmental performance. The new plant will strengthen SAIL ISP’s production capabilities while contributing to national objectives for cleaner, low-carbon steel production.

Metso and SAIL share a long-standing collaboration in traveling grate sintering plants. Metso has previously delivered four sintering plants to SAIL, establishing a proven track record of successful project execution and technological support. This latest order reinforces their partnership and highlights Metso’s role in enabling sustainable steelmaking practices in India.

Once operational, the new sinter production line is expected to enhance ISP’s overall steel output, improve energy efficiency, and reduce environmental impact. The plant aligns with India’s broader industrial and sustainability goals, supporting the steel sector’s modernization and low-carbon transition.

The project also underscores the global trend of integrating advanced technologies into heavy industry to meet both production and environmental objectives, demonstrating how industry leaders can combine efficiency with sustainability. Metso’s involvement in the ISP expansion reflects its strategic focus on supporting partners with high-performance solutions that balance operational output and environmental responsibility.

With the 2029 operational target, SAIL ISP will be well-positioned to meet growing domestic steel demand while minimizing carbon emissions, showcasing a model for sustainable industrial development in India.
