Kyle McCarter, middle, partner at Everstrong Capital and chair of the Usahihi consortium, welcoming Turner & Townsend to the $3.6bn Usahihi Nairobi-Mombasa Expressway project
The 459-kilometer tolled expressway will reduce travel time between Mombasa on the coast and Nairobi, Kenya's capital, from over 10 hours to less than five. It will relieve traffic on the existing A8 highway, enhance safety, and accelerate the movement of passengers and freight.
The Kenya National Highways Authority is presently evaluating the project's feasibility study.
Turner & Townsend collaborates with Everstrong Capital and the Usahihi consortium, which includes TRAC, Lotz to Develop, Ashitiva Advocates, Rebel, Andersen, CPF Group, and Kurrent.
In Uganda, the firm has contributed to Kabalega International Airport and the Tilenga oil development.
“Turner & Townsend’s track record across Africa speaks for itself,” said Kyle McCarter, partner at Everstrong Capital, chair of the Usahihi consortium, and US Ambassador to Kenya between 2019 and 2021. “Their expertise in large-scale, complex projects ensures that the Usahihi Expressway will not only be delivered successfully but will also set a new benchmark for infrastructure delivery on the continent.”
John Rogers, Turner & Townsend’s regional director for East Africa, said: “The Usahihi Expressway isn’t just a road, it’s a catalyst for economic growth, regional integration and climate-smart development.”
The company stated that the initiative is expected to serve as a model for sustainable infrastructure across Africa, incorporating intelligent transport systems, electric vehicle charging points, wildlife passages, and engineering designed for climate resilience.
