Wedoany.com Report-Nov. 6, The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has announced plans for major transportation infrastructure upgrades in India, focusing on improving connectivity and easing congestion in the Thane area, located just north of Mumbai. The initiative forms part of a broader regional development strategy aimed at addressing rising traffic volumes and supporting urban expansion.
One of the key projects involves the construction of a new elevated highway section carrying the Anand Nagar–Saket Road. The highway will feature three lanes in each direction and is estimated to cost about $210 million. The project is designed to improve traffic flow between key residential and commercial zones, reducing travel times and supporting economic activity in the surrounding areas.
Another major project under the plan is the widening of Ghodbunder Road in Thane. Valued at approximately $60 million, this upgrade will expand the road to a total of seven lanes in each direction. The use of concrete pavement for construction is expected to enhance the route’s durability and reduce long-term maintenance costs. Once completed, the project will significantly increase the road’s capacity, improving safety and efficiency for daily commuters.
Both projects are part of MMRDA’s broader programme to enhance transport infrastructure across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. The overall budget for this development initiative exceeds $620 million. In addition to road construction, the programme includes the installation of modern traffic management technologies across several major routes. These systems aim to optimize traffic signals, monitor congestion levels, and improve overall transportation efficiency in the region.
The upgrades are considered essential due to the rapid population growth and significant rise in vehicle numbers in Thane and nearby areas. As urban development accelerates, the region has experienced increased pressure on its road network, leading to frequent congestion during peak hours. The MMRDA’s projects are expected to help alleviate these challenges by providing additional road capacity and implementing smarter traffic control solutions.
The authority has stated that improving the transportation network is a key priority for sustaining regional economic growth and enhancing mobility for residents. The upcoming projects represent an important step in the city’s long-term urban infrastructure plan, which aims to strengthen connectivity between Mumbai and its expanding suburban areas.
Through these initiatives, MMRDA seeks to create a more efficient, safe, and reliable road network to meet the needs of a growing population and to support the continued development of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
