Wedoany.com Report-Nov. 26, Framatome has completed manufacturing the first lead nuclear fuel assemblies for the Barakah nuclear power plant in the UAE, as part of a fuel supply agreement signed with Emirates Nuclear Energy Company (ENEC) in July.

The assemblies were produced at Framatome's facility in Richland, Washington, USA, and will now be shipped to the Barakah plant for detailed testing. The agreement covers the supply of complete fuel assemblies for the four APR1400 reactors at Barakah, along with engineering support services provided from Framatome's US headquarters in Lynchburg, Virginia.

The collaboration enables ENEC to diversify its nuclear fuel supply sources, strengthening long-term energy security and ensuring continuous carbon-free electricity generation for homes, industries, and businesses across the UAE.

Framatome CEO Grégoire Ponchon said: "The successful fabrication of the first lead fuel assemblies is a testament to the dedication and expertise of our teams, and it underscores Framatome's role as a trusted partner in the global nuclear industry. We look forward to continuing our collaboration with ENEC to ensure the safe and efficient operation of the Barakah Plant."

ENEC Managing Director and Group CEO Mohamed Al Hammadi said: "Our partnership with Framatome is an important component of our wider strategy to ensure a resilient fuel supply for Barakah. Framatome's expertise and manufacturing capabilities align perfectly with ENEC's commitment to the highest safety and performance standards – by strengthening Barakah’s fuel supply chain, we are supporting continued operational excellence and always-on power generation at Barakah to power the nation’s leading industries, businesses and of course our communities."

A comprehensive qualification programme will now verify the new fuel design's safety, compatibility, and performance under real operating conditions at Barakah before commercial use begins. Following successful testing, the assemblies will be gradually integrated into the plant’s fuel loading schedule, maintaining full compliance with regulatory requirements.

The Barakah plant, which houses four APR1400 reactors, continues to play a central role in the UAE's clean energy strategy by providing reliable, low-carbon electricity around the clock. The addition of Framatome as a qualified supplier further enhances operational flexibility and supply chain resilience for the facility.
