TBM Breaks Through at Patna Metro’s PMCH Station in India
Wedoany.com Report-Dec.13, A tunnel boring machine has achieved breakthrough at the developing Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH) metro station on the PC-03 corridor of the Patna Metro in Bihar, India.
Estimated at $1.47bn, the project will deliver the city's first underground metro line.
This accomplishment signifies an important advancement for the city's inaugural underground metro segment, where operations across as many as five stations are anticipated to commence by the close of December.
The PC-03 corridor traverses central Patna and stands out as one of the more complex sections within the overall network due to technical requirements.
Launched in 2023 from Moin-ul-Haq Stadium, the machine has advanced beneath areas including Rajendra Nagar, Patna University, PMCH, Gandhi Maidan, and Akashvani, with its next destination being Patna Junction.
The completion at PMCH is projected to facilitate accelerated tunnelling and streamline works at following stations.
In parallel, preparatory measures for laying tracks in the subsurface section between Rajendra Nagar and Patna University have begun, accompanied by the release of a related tender.
Ground examinations remain underway along the intended tunnel path from Rukanpura to Patna Junction.
Drilling operations occur at approximately 12 locations on Nehru Path, reaching depths of up to 50 meters, to evaluate subsurface stability.
Collected samples undergo laboratory analysis to inform alignment decisions and structural safeguards.
Stations along the PC-03 corridor incorporate features for user convenience and information, such as escalators, elevators, and digital screens providing real-time service details.
Additional elements include automated ticketing systems, QR-enabled smart cards, platform screen doors, and designated commercial zones with retail and dining options at select sites.
Safety provisions encompass CCTV monitoring, emergency call points, and dedicated personnel.
The Patna Metro initiative received approval in 2019 as a collaborative effort between the Government of India and the Government of Bihar.
Implementation responsibilities rest with the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation.
Total estimated expenditure stands at Rs133.65 billion, with financing assistance from the Japan International Cooperation Agency.
A trial operation conducted on September 29, 2025, verified performance of signalling, communication networks, fare collection mechanisms, braking functions, and emergency procedures.
