Wedoany.com Report-Dec.13, The West Gate Tunnel project in Melbourne, Australia, delivered by the CPB Contractors and John Holland joint venture, represents the most substantial road infrastructure development in the city since the CityLink opened in 1998.
The 4km outbound tunnel will be known as the Eureka Tunnel
Twin underground tunnels extend from the West Gate Freeway to Yarraville, linking to a newly constructed bridge spanning the Maribyrnong River. The initiative aims to alleviate traffic pressure on the West Gate Freeway and Bridge while decreasing heavy vehicle presence in local residential areas by offering a dedicated pathway to the port.
The outbound tunnel, measuring 4 kilometers, has been designated the Eureka Tunnel, reflecting recognition of Australian workers and the enhanced connection it establishes to Ballarat and western Victoria.
The inbound tunnel, at 2.8 kilometers, bears the name Bundawanh Tunnel, translating to "he/she dug" in the language of the Bunurong people, the traditional custodians of the area.
Excavation of both tunnels was accomplished using two large-diameter tunnel boring machines named Bella and Vida, each 15.6 meters across.
This project introduces Australia's first tunnel design incorporating an elevated roadway deck. The resulting lower level accommodates essential maintenance, ventilation systems, and emergency pathways.
Completion of the West Gate Tunnel follows the recent commencement of operations in Melbourne's Metro Tunnel on November 30.
These combined developments enhance the city's transport network, improving connectivity and traffic management across key corridors.
