Wedoany.com Report-Dec.16, Portuguese tannery exports increased by 5.8 percent in 2025. Through September, the sector recorded shipments valued at 81 million euros. The primary destinations included Spain with 17 million euros (a decrease of 4.6 percent), Italy with 13 million euros (an increase of 8.7 percent), and France with 11 million euros (an increase of 31.2 percent).

According to the APICCAPS (Portuguese Footwear, Components, Leather Goods Manufacturers' Association) Research Office, "this performance reflects the recovery in external demand and the ongoing efforts to modernise production and adapt to global quality and sustainability requirements".

The upward trend indicates that Portuguese leather producers are strengthening their market position amid fluctuating conditions and input cost variations. The industry demonstrates adaptability through consistent adherence to elevated quality standards, alignment with European regulations, and responsive service to international clients.

This export progress supports the broader supply chain, providing reliable access to premium materials for local manufacturers and enhancing overall sector competitiveness.

"A strong leather industry ensures the supply of high-quality raw materials to domestic manufacturers, thereby strengthening the sector's global competitiveness", says APICCAPS.

The results align with APICCAPS initiatives to highlight leather's attributes internationally. These activities focus on clarifying common perceptions and presenting evidence of leather's advantages, including its longevity and origin as a by-product of the food industry suitable for secondary use.

"Leather is undoubtedly the best raw material on the market", says Luís Onofre, President of APICCAPS.

In research and development, the sector continues to prioritize sustainable practices in hide preparation and tanning processes. Such advancements form a core component of the BioShoes4All project, coordinated by APICCAPS in partnership with the Footwear Technology Centre.

These combined efforts in production modernization, market promotion, and innovation contribute to sustained growth and positioning within the global leather industry.
