Wedoany.com Report-Dec.27, China's cotton production reached 6.641 million tonnes in 2025, reflecting a year-on-year increase of 7.7 percent, according to data released by the National Bureau of Statistics on December 26, 2025.

The growth resulted from both an expansion in planted area and higher yield efficiency. Nationwide cotton planting area grew by 5 percent compared to 2024, while average yield per unit area rose 2.6 percent to 2,229 kilograms per hectare.

Xinjiang remained the dominant production region and contributed significantly to the national increase. Output in Xinjiang rose 8.4 percent to 6.165 million tonnes, accounting for over 92 percent of the country's total cotton production. This strong performance was supported by favorable growing conditions and continued improvements in cultivation practices.

In comparison, cotton production in the Yangtze River basin declined by 0.7 percent, and output in the Yellow River basin fell 1.5 percent. These regions have gradually shifted focus toward other crops in recent years, further concentrating cotton cultivation in Xinjiang.

The higher domestic supply helps meet steady demand from China's textile and apparel industry, one of the largest in the world. Increased production also contributes to stable availability of raw materials for downstream manufacturing.

The 2025 results highlight ongoing advancements in agricultural productivity, particularly in major growing areas. Enhanced yield per hectare demonstrates effective application of modern farming techniques, including improved seed varieties and optimized resource management.

Overall, the combination of expanded planting area and improved efficiency enabled China to achieve a substantial rise in cotton output for the year. This development supports the textile sector's requirements and reinforces the country's position as a leading cotton producer globally.

The data from the National Bureau of Statistics provides a clear overview of regional contributions and national trends in cotton cultivation for 2025.
